The distinction here drawn between two Aphrodites recurs in Xenophon's Symposium, where Socrates suggests that they may be essentially the same, though they have different titles and different temples. The existence of different temples is confirmed by the traveller Pausanias in the 2nd century A.D., but the exact significance of the title Pandemos (Common) is obscure. In any case the deductions drawn here about the natures of the two goddesses are presumably Plato's own.
