As a verb, service is a newcomer. In the sense either of giving periodical attention to a machine, or of providing interest and amortisation for a loan, it fills a gap and seems to have established itself in spite of opposition from high authority. But it must be kept in its place, and not allowed to usurp the functions of serve as it does in

A large number of depots of one sort or another will be required to service the town,
To enable a Local Authority to take advantage of this provision it is essential that sites should be available, ready serviced with roads and sewers.
