Character
From 'Vocabulary' part of The ABC Of Plain Words by Sir E Gowers (1951)

Beware of the roundabout phrases formed with this and similar words (nature, for instance) and used instead of simple adjectives:

An undertaking of a hazardous character (hazardous undertaking).
The weather will be of a showery character (it will be showery).
Industrialists of a more substantial character (more substantial industrialists).
Work of maintenance and repair of a less urgent character (less urgent work of maintenance and repair).
