Once a reader of Modern English Literature at the University of Leicester, born in Scotland, G. S. Fraser was a poet, critic, and teacher who had taught English in Japan and, more recently, in the United States. His most recent volume of poems is Conditions (1969). One volume of literary history "The Modern Writer and His World" was first published in Japan in 1951 and, under various imprints and with various publishers, has been continuously in print since then, with periodical revisions. An edition with a new epilogue came out in 1970. His monograph Ezra Pound (1960) has been translated into French and Spanish. His most recent prose book was a technical study, Metre, Rhyme, and Free Verse (1970). A longer essay on his present subject, Lawrence Durrell: A Study, came out in 1968. He is the author of short studies on W. B. Yeats and Dylan Thomas.
