The third-century virgin martyr, was executed by her own father who, it is said, was struck dead by lighting as he finished his task. St Barbara subsequently became the patron of gunners and, in consequence, also the protectress of warriors. The allusion to the need to get the formula right is typical of the extrinsicism of much popular late medieval devotion.
