La Bruyère is criticizing Molière's Tartuffe on grounds of truthfulness; this, he says, is how a hypocrite really behaves. But apart from the obvious fact that Molière was writing for comic theatrical effect, hypocrisy had altered its manners considerably between 1664 and 1691.
