How The Selfish Avoid Responsibility
From '2 Kinds Of People From 2 Kinds Of Understanding' by P Atkinson (2006 January)

Skilled Manipulators
Relieved of the demands of integrity and sincerity the selfish excel in manipulating those they encounter by using techniques they have been practicing since early childhood. For it was by fooling parental authority that they learnt how to indulge their wants while avoiding penalty for their crimes. The instinctive children's tears to deter wrath; pretence of sickness to win sympathy; lies to avert justice; all become dependable tools to regularly employ. To win their own way they know what expressions to adopt, what words to utter and what tone to invoke. And they constantly use and refine these methods throughout their life.
