Note 15

Vespasian must have sent the ships immediately he heard of Rome's predicament. This must have happened in February, and before the normal opening of the summer sailing season in March. Titus left Alexandria c. 1 April. Tacitus has postponed the mention of the corn ships in order to secure an easy transition to the events narrated in ch. 53, which were themselves a consequence of orders conveyed to Rome in February.
