Note 25

Untrue: archaeology shows that the defences were undergoing continual improvement during the first century, and now included a ditch, rampart, gates and towers, as is clear from Tacitus' own account. There was also a well-designed H.Q. building, as well as a military hospital and the usual barrack blocks.
