Carthaginians

The Carthaginians also fought three great wars against Rome-the First Punic War, 264-241 B.C., the Second (the Hannibalic), 218-202 B.C., the Third, ending in the destruction of Carthage, 149-146 B.C. In the First war Rome lost a consular army (Regulus) in Africa and fleet after fleet in storms and defeats at sea. In the Second, Hannibal routed great Roman armies at the Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae, wandered over Italy at will for half a generation, and at one moment threatened the very existence of Rome.
