denarii

The pectuua vetus was the denarius of the Republic, about 10d. in value (circa 1948). The bigati had as reverse type Diana or Victory in a two-horse chariot (biga). The serrati had notches in their edges, intended to show that the metal was pure. The two classes seem to be used, with some little inaccuracy, to denote the earlier Roman silver in general.
