John Gay (1688-1732) is perhaps best known as the author of Gay's Fables. He had always been intimate with Pope and Swift, the latter of whom recommended to him the scheme of his 'Beggar's Opera,' which was performed with so much success as to bring him £700 of profits, and which was the foundation of the English Opera.
