Note by A Milnes to Translation of the Iliad a chapter of The Life Of Pope

This opinion was reported to Pope by Gay, in a letter of July 8, 1715. Gay seems to have acted very efficiently here in the character of a mischief-maker. He was one of those 'damned good-natured friends,' as Johnson used to call them, who always manage to say the wrong thing to the wrong man at the wrong time.
