There can be no doubt that Johnson is right here about the feelings with which the lady's family regarded the poem. Pope himself, in a letter to Caryll (Dec. 15,1713), proposes to write a dedication to soothe her, and as

'a piece of justice in return to the wrong interpretations she has suffered under on the score of that piece.'
