This is Mr. Ralph Allen, who introduced into the postal system of the country the system of cross posts, obviating the inconvenience, which had obtained till his time, that a letter from one provincial town to another had always to be sent through London. He was much respected by the authors of his time, and supplied Fielding with the original of his beautiful character of Squire Allworthy, in 'Tom Jones'.
