In the summer of 1822 George IV paid a visit to Edinburgh, anchoring on August 14 in the Roads of Leith. Although it was a day of pouring rain, Scott, who had taken charge of the arrangements for entertaining the royal visitor, had himself rowed out to the Royal George to welcome him.
