First Reported Action Of 'Word Police'
Operation Napkin — The Gold Coast Bulletin 29-30/4/2000

POLICE who went undercover as diners in restaurants to weed out customers hurling racist abuse at staff have hailed the operation a success.

Operation Napkin was launched in Gloucester last month with pairs of plain-clothes officers tucking into meals in Indian and Chinese restaurants.

Chief Inspector Dean Walker said:

"We feel the scheme has been a success already and made drunken people think it is not okay to racially abuse staff."
